6 Reasons to Visit Brussels

Begin your exploration of Belgium in Brussels, the lively capital that serves as a convenient starting point to discover the diverse attractions of the country. While Bruges and Ghent offer fairytale-like landscapes, and Antwerp shines as a diamond hub, Brussels is a bustling city that captivates. Its melting pot of cultures is evident in its diverse neighborhoods and the multitude of languages spoken. It has a quaint charm that blends the old and the new from the iconic Grand Place to the futuristic Atomium.

The Grand Place is the central square known for its beautiful, intricate architecture. Enjoy the ambiance of the this area by sitting at one of the surrounding cafes. The central focal point is the Town Hall, an impressive Gothic building that adds to the area's historical significance.  The Grand Place and its Town Hall are associated with key moments in Belgium's history, including the 1830 Belgian Revolution, when the country gained independence.

Manneken Pis

Nearby the Grand Place, you'll find "Little Pissing Man," located at the corner of Rue de l’Étuve and Rue du Chêne. This beloved statue is often dressed in various costumes and outfits. While there are many legends around the origination of Manneken Pis, it now stands as a playful symbol of Brussels' sense of humor and cultural identity. Don't forget about the female version, Jeanneke Pis.

2. The Chocolate and Waffle Tasting

Belgium is famous for their high-quality chocolate where 100% of the process of mixing, refining, and conching is done in the country. For a more authentic experience, consider trying a chocolate-making or chocolate-tasting tour.

Recommended Chocolatiers: Neuhaus, Elisabeth, Pierre Marcolini, and Chocolaterie Mary.

Don't overlook Belgium's Liège waffles, crafted from a brioche-like dough and studded with chunks of pearl sugar. Maison Dandoy is a popular restaurant where you can savor this delicacy.

3. The Atomium

Explore The Atomium, a symbol of modern Brussels. It's a blown-up version of an iron crystal representing faith in science and nuclear power. You can go inside its spheres to discover exhibitions on science and innovation, and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the top.

4. The Local Beer and Fries

Belgian fries, or "frites," are renowned for their exceptional crispiness. They are often double-fried to achieve the perfect golden exterior and a fluffy interior. Pair a cone of crispy fries with a refreshing Belgian beer at the renowned Delirium Cafe. This iconic beer bar boats an extensive selection of over 2,000 local and international beers. Try samples at the Belgium beer section to get a taste of the local brews.

5. The Royal Palace of Brussels

Visiting the Royal Palace of Brussels provides an opportunity to explore the historical and architectural aspects of Belgium's monarchy. While the inside is normally closed to the public, you can admire the exterior grandeur and walk through the surrounding gardens.

6. The Genever “Jenever” Bars

Experience the traditional Belgian spirit, Genever, at one of Brussels' authentic Genever bars. While it’s called “Belgian Gin” by some, don’t let any bartenders hear you say that unless you want an impromptu education into the distillation process. “Old” and “young,” creamy or malty – Genever is a great choice because there’s something for everyone. There are chocolate or vanilla flavors that’ll satisfy your sweet tooth, classic styles that resemble a vodka shot, or opt for some adventurous infusions of all flavors from botanicals to a smoky mezcal taste.

Tip: If you don’t want to stand out as a tourist, don’t pick up the shot of Genever after it’s poured. Bend down, sip off the top, then proceed to pick it up and finish the shot.
