Transportation



Antigua is roughly an hour drive from Guatemala City.


Chicken Bus: The local form of transportation. Rates are ~$1.25 to get to Antigua. The downside is the safety and their reputation for inaccurate timing.

Shuttle: ~$15 for a shared shuttle and ~$30-40 for a private. Recommended company: Adrenalina Tours.

Uber: ~$20 to Antigua.

Things to Do



Santa Catalina Arch


The iconic arch offers a picturesque frame of Volcan de Agua. It was formerly a convent, used by nuns to cross from one building to the next without having to go out into the street.



Iglesia de la Merced


A Baroque-style church that's still in use, featuring intricate stucco work and an impressive facade. It was designed to withstand Guatemala's frequent earthquakes with the low height of its two bell towers.



Antigua Guatemala Cathedral, Catedral de San Jose

Originally built in 1545, the cathedral has undergone several renovations after earthquakes damaged it over the years. Explore religious art, climb to the roof for panoramic views, and admire the architectural styles.



Antigua Central Mercado



Markets have been a central part of Antigua's cultural and economic life for centuries. Antigua's main market, offers a variety of fresh produce, while the attached Mercado de Artesanías is known for handmade crafts and textiles. Taste local flavors, shop for souvenirs, and experience the lively energy of this authentic Guatemalan market.



Cerro de la Cruz

Cerro de la Cruz was a lookout for potential threats during the colonial era. Hike up at sunset for aerial views of Antigua, looking straight at Volcan Agua. It’s a short and easy 20-25 minute hike from the center of town.



Acatenango Volcano

The best thing to do in Antigua for an incredible experience. Embark on a challenging hike to Acatenango, camping overnight for a spectacular view of the neighboring Volcan Fuego. It provides a thrilling outdoor adventure coupled with the opportunity to witness live volcanic activity. The night sky is illuminated by the orange glow of molten lava with the sound of low rumbles and occasional crackles. You don't need to book a tour ahead of time, there are many operators offering trips in town as early as the next day.
